Sept, 2024

On 25 September 2024, the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (BNP) hosted a highly anticipated debate as part of the ongoing "Opções Políticas: Ciclo de Debates" series. The event, titled “As Origens Intelectuais da Revolução - As Causas dos Livros”,  took place at 17h00 in the BNP auditorium.

The session was moderated by António Costa Pinto, a distinguished political scientist and historian, known for his extensive research on Portuguese authoritarianism and democratization. Costa Pinto's expertise guided an engaging discussion about the intellectual and literary underpinnings of revolutionary movements.

Joining him as panelists were:

  • António Araújo, historian and essayist,
  • Henrique Monteiro, journalist and commentator,
  • Jaime Nogueira Pinto, political thinker and historian,
  • José Neves, social historian,
  • Rita Almeida de Carvalho, historian and professor,
  • Tiago Fernandes, political scientist and academic.

This diverse panel offered rich perspectives on the historical and ideological forces that have shaped political revolutions, drawing from their respective fields of expertise. Together, they explored how books and intellectual movements have been instrumental in igniting and sustaining revolutionary causes, focusing on the Portuguese context and beyond.

The event promised to deliver a thought-provoking dialogue on the intersection between literature and politics, offering both historical insights and contemporary reflections on how intellectual currents influence political change.

This debate was open to the public and is part of BNP’s broader mission to foster intellectual discussions on Portugal’s political history and its global impact.
