LusoGlobe – Lusófona Centre on Global Challenges hosted the conference “Consular Diplomacy in an Evolving (Geo)political Environment” on April 16, 2026, bringing together students and experts to discuss the changing role of consular diplomacy in today’s global context.

The keynote speaker, Joris Salden, Director-General for Consular Affairs at the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, provided an insider perspective on how Belgium and the European Union navigate an increasingly complex and volatile international environment shaped by geopolitical tensions, global crises, and digital transformation.

The event highlighted the growing importance of consular diplomacy, which focuses on the relationship between states and individuals, addressing issues such as citizen protection abroad, migration management, and international influence.

Opening remarks were delivered by Jorge Botelho Moniz (Lusófona University) and Nadia Benini, Consul-General of Belgium in Portugal, followed by the keynote lecture and an interactive Q&A session.
