Participation in International Research Project on Social Work and Social Movements

April, 2026

On April 23, LusoGlobe hosted an initiative the international research project “Social Work in History: Social Question and Social Movements – Latin America and Europe (1960–2020)”. The project brings together more than 49 academic institutions across eight countries — Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom — fostering a critical and comparative analysis of social transformations and the role of Social Work across diverse historical and geographical contexts.

The data collection phase included the participation of Brazilian researchers Cláudia Mônica dos Santos, Alexandra Eiras, Alzira Lewgoy, and Kathiúscia Coelho, whose work contributes to mapping trajectories of critical Social Work and its engagement with social movements.

As part of this visit, an interview was conducted with Nélson Ramalho, faculty member at the Institute of Social Work and researcher at LusoGlobe. He shared his perspective on critical Social Work and the involvement of social workers in social movements, highlighting the importance of professional engagement in broader processes of social and political transformation.

The project seeks to deepen reflection on these dimensions by examining how different national contexts — including the Portuguese case — shape the training and practice of professionals oriented toward participation in social movements.

LusoGlobe’s participation in this initiative reinforces its commitment to internationalization, scientific cooperation, and the development of critical knowledge in the field of Social Work.
