The 5th International Congress on Angolan Studies took place on 26 May 2026 at the National Library of Portugal. Over the years, this congress has become an important reference point for scholars dedicated to the academic study of Angola.
Lusoglobe was represented by lecturer and researcher José António Carochinho, who chaired a panel on “Political Economy, Oil and Development”. In a separate panel, he presented a paper examining Angolan students’ perceptions of trust in institutions, comparing a sample of Angolan students residing in Angola with a sample of Angolan students studying in Portugal. The findings proved particularly insightful. Overall, the highest levels of trust were placed in religious institutions and traditional authorities, while the lowest levels of trust were associated with political institutions and the justice system. Students in Angola tended to prioritise stability, order, authority and institutional continuity. By contrast, Angolan students in Portugal showed a stronger preference for transparency, rights, meritocracy, accountability and institutional independence.
