Event on Peace and Security Studies Explored the Colombian Peace Process

On February 25, 2025, LusoGlobe hosted a significant event in Room G.1.6, focusing on Colombia’s peace process and the role played by various international stakeholders.

The event featured distinguished experts, including:

  • Prof. Anna María Franco Gantiva, from the Universitat de Girona, presented her insights on the environmental dimensions of the Colombian Peace Agreement, highlighting the impact of the armed conflict on the environment and climate adaptation strategies in post-conflict Colombia. She also serves as the Research Coordinator at OBS Business School.

  • Dr. João do Vale de Sousa, a PhD student at ISCTE-IUL/AM, contextualized Portugal’s involvement in UN missions in Colombia, analyzing the impact of these operations on the peace verification process.

  • Major João Bengalinha, of the Portuguese Air Force, shared his experience as an International Observer in the UN Verification Mission in Colombia (MVNUC), reflecting on the challenges, progress, and Portugal’s crucial role in the mission.

  • Commander Helena Reÿs Santos, Deputy Officer for NATO Affairs at EMGFA, a specialist in Gender Perspective in Defense and Security, discussed her leadership in gender initiatives within military operations, strategy, and training, including her role as a UN Observer in Colombia. She holds certifications in Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (Rice University), Gender Analytics (University of Toronto), and Gender Equality in Defense (ISCSP, UN, NATO).

The event fostered enriching discussions on the intersection of peace, security, and environmental sustainability, providing valuable perspectives for students and professionals in the field of Peace and Security Studies.
