Unlocking the Democratic Legacy of the Carnation Revolution: Commemorative Panel to Be Held in Washington, D.C.

To honor the 50th anniversary of Portugal's Carnation Revolution, Georgetown University and the Embassy of Portugal was set to host a two-day panel discussion, “Unlocking the Democratic Legacy of the April 25, 1974 Carnation Revolution in Portugal.”

This event featured distinguished speakers such as:

  • Maria Inácia Rezola, Executive Commissioner for the Commemorations of the 50th Anniversary of the April 25th Revolution,
  • Prof. António Costa Pinto, Historian and professor at Lusófona University, 
  • Daniela F. Melo, Political scientist and lecturer at Boston University,
  • Paul C. Manuel: Expert in comparative politics and professor at Georgetown University.

The first panel took place on November 14th, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the Residence of the Ambassador of Portugal. Titled “The Democratic Legacy of the April 25th Revolution,” this discussion explored the democratic changes sparked by the Carnation Revolution. 

The second panel, titled “The Captains of April,” took place on November 15th, from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at Georgetown University’s Intercultural Center. This session focused on the individuals behind the revolution, especially the military officers, known as the "Captains of April".
