Book Launch Announcement: “Governing Oceans”

2024

Parallel to the prestigious The Economist #WorldOceanSummit in Lisbon we announce the launch of a groundbreaking book, "Governing Oceans: Policy Development, Implementation, and Evaluation," in which Sabrina Medeiros, has contributed.

Edited by Catherine Jones of the School of International Relations at the University of St Andrews, this insightful publication critically evaluates the effectiveness of current ocean governance frameworks. As we confront escalating threats such as increased sea temperatures and biodiversity loss, the contributors to this book pose the critical question: what type of political space do the oceans occupy, and is it possible to create, implement, and assess an international framework for governing our oceans?

The chapter "Multilevel Cooperation on Behalf of Ocean Governance: The Brazilian Navy Case Study," explores innovative approaches to collaborative governance, drawing upon the unique experiences and challenges faced by the Brazilian Navy. Through practical case studies and comprehensive analysis, we aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of how multilevel cooperation can enhance the management of our marine resources.

"Governing Oceans" adopts a unique interdisciplinary approach, bringing together experts from political sciences, heritage management, marine policy, and coastal ecosystems. By identifying current challenges, sharing best practices, and developing pragmatic solutions, this book serves as a blueprint for improving the management of our seas.
