Chapter published in Palgrave Handbook on the South Atlantic

Sabrina Evangelista Medeiros, researcher at the LusoGlobe – Lusófona Centre on Global Challenges, has recently published the chapter “Protecting South America’s Atlantic Waters: A Closer Look at Maritime Security and CAMAS” in The Palgrave Handbook on Geopolitics of Brazil and the South Atlantic, an international reference volume published by Palgrave Macmillan.

Co-authored with William de Sousa Moreira, the chapter examines the evolution of CAMAS (Coordination of the South Atlantic Maritime Area) as a framework for maritime security cooperation in the South Atlantic. Moving beyond a purely formal or institutional reading, the analysis highlights CAMAS as a practical mechanism for regional coordination, integrating defence, diplomacy, and technical cooperation.

The chapter offers key insights into how CAMAS contributes to maritime domain awareness, information sharing, inter-agency cooperation, and confidence-building among South Atlantic states. It also discusses coordinated responses to non-traditional maritime security challenges, including illegal fishing, illicit trafficking, and environmental risks, as well as the broader implications for regional autonomy in maritime governance.
