Elisa García Lerena is a PhD candidate in International Relations at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), under the supervision of Dr. Concepción Anguita Olmedo and Dr. Javier Bernabé Fraguas, where she holds a predoctoral research position within the Department of International Relations and Global History. She holds a Master’s degree in Human Geography, specializing in Migration, from Radboud University (The Netherlands), and a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from UCM.
Her research focuses on international migration and contemporary border regimes, with particular attention to irregular migration towards the European Union, the securitization of migration, and the protection of migrants’ human rights. She has previously been associated with the Nijmegen Centre for Border Research (The Netherlands) and is currently a member of the Academic Unit for Communication against Violence of Fundación Universitaria para el Desarrollo Humano (UNINPAHU) in Bogotá, Colombia.
As a Visiting Researcher at the Lusófona Centre on Global Challenges (LusoGlobe), Elisa García Lerena contributes to the Centre’s international research environment through collaborative activities on global governance, security, migration, and interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary global challenges. Her research stay aims to strengthen academic cooperation between Universidade Lusófona and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid while fostering dialogue between different perspectives on international security and human mobility.
