João Resende-Santos is an Associate Professor of International Studies at Bentley University, Waltham Massachusetts, USA. He received his PhD in Political Science from Harvard University, specializing in international relations. Prior to Bentley University, he was a Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to academic teaching and research, he has also engaged in practitioner work as an international consultant and policy advisor in the Government of Cabo Verde. From 2009 to 2011, he served as Dean of the School of Business and Governance (ENG), the University of Cape Verde (UNICV). His first book, Neorealism, the State, and the Modern Mass Army, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2007.
His current areas of research and scholarship focus on two broad areas: US foreign policy in the Global South during the Cold War, and Cabo Verde foreign relations and political economy. His most recent publication focuses on migration and monetary remittances, including “How Migrant Remittances Respond to Homeland Crises,” Journal of Contemporary African Studies (June 2024). He is also finalizing revisions for a journal article on “US Policy and Portuguese Africa During the Nixon Period.” As a Fulbright Scholar and LusoGlobe Visiting Researcher, João will be conducting archival research for two book projects, one on Cabo Verde’s postcolonial foreign relations and the other on US-Portugal relations during the decolonization process, 1950-1975. João was born in Cabo Verde, but emigrated as a child to the United States where he currently resides.
